Information Session FAQ

Why should I go?
Attending an information session is a great way to network, and make recruiters aware of your interest in their organization. Interacting with recruiters at various functions allows you to establish a relationship and build a rapport. Additionally, attending information sessions enables you to increase your knowledge not only about that organization, but about their industry as well.

Will the recruiter remember me? Should I follow up?
Recruiters will absolutely remember you, particularly if you take advantage of other opportunities to network (e.g., Career Fairs). It’s important to get a business card and follow up with recruiter. A short note or email is always appreciated, just to say that you enjoyed meeting them, you learned a lot at the information session, and you appreciate their support of Notre Dame. If you can reference something specific you talked about in the note/email, so much the better.

I have a scheduling conflict and can only make part of the session. Do I have to stay the whole time?
No, recruiters are aware of the hectic schedules of students. If you arrive on time, but have to leave early, it is good etiquette to speak to the recruiter/presenter beforehand, let them know you are very interested in their organization and wanted to attend as much of the session as possible, but do have a conflict and will have to leave early. If you arrive late, again, speak to the recruiter/presenter afterwards, tell them you had a conflict earlier in the evening, but that you are very interested in their organization and wanted to attend as much of the session as possible.

What do I wear?
Business casual works for 95% of the information sessions. In a few industries, such as investment banking, where there is a high level of interaction with clients, you will see many students in suits or jacket/tie.

Should I bring a resume?
Generally an information session is not an appropriate venue to hand out your resume. The purpose is more information gathering and networking. However, you should have your resumes available, in the event that you are asked for it.

If an organization is coming to a Career Fair, should I just wait to talk to them then?
No, as addressed above, if you are truly interested in an organization, take advantage of every opportunity to network with them, and establish a relationship.

How should I prepare?
Preparation is not required, but you will maximize your experience if you review the company’s website and prepare questions to ask after presentation. Avoid asking questions that could be easily answered on the company website, this shows you have not done your basic research. Do not dominate the conversation if there are other students around.
