Indiana Internships

Summer 2009
The application deadline for Summer 2009 is May 16, 2009.
Who is eligible?
- To be eligible, students must be a current Notre Dame sophomore or junior, participating in an internship that meets the program criteria and submit all of the required documentation. Masters students are also eligible, but will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
- Application deadline is May 16, 2009 – although Indiana funding awards are given on a first-come, first-served rolling basis, so earlier submissions are recommended. - Students are encouraged to utilize Career Center services in their internship search and will receive support from the The Career Center staff with their internship search, but will need to obtain and be hired into their internship on their own merit.
Internship Criteria:
Internships must fit the following criteria:
- Employment on a full-time basis for a minimum of 8 weeks during the summer of 2009.
- Duties must be consistent with the student’s level of education and related to their area of study
- Awards will be granted based on a first-come, first-served basis, while attempting to spread positions across 7 key fields as stated in the original Lilly grant: Non-Profit and Service organizations, Health Care, Government, Law/Business, Technology, Media/Entertainment and the Arts.
How do I apply?
- Before funds are approved and distributed, the following documents must be complete and on file in The Career Center GII office. Paper copies of these forms are also available in The Career Center.
- Intern Enrollment Form – completed by student
- Employer Verification Form – completed by employer
- Student Agreement/Waiver Form – completed by student
- Projected Summer Expense Report – completed by student indicating expenses and financial need
- Personal Resume
- 1-2 page essay describing:
- your internship organization, position including roles and responsibilities,
- how you plan to grow intellectually, thus enhancing skills developed through a Notre Dame education through the experience,
- specific learning objectives, focusing on how the internship will help you develop knowledge and skills specific to a career or setting and
- to explore career options, understand career pathways and acquire work skills, e.g. communication, coping, teamwork, time management, interpersonal skills and goal setting
- All applicants must read the Tax Implications Letter regarding receipt of this award and the affect it may have on your taxes.
- All applicants receiving financial aid should contact the Financial Aid office to evaluate the impact receiving of these funds may have on their financial aid package.
- All applicants should meet with the GII Program Director at some time before submission of their documents.
How much money is available?
Up to $3000 will be provided for qualified internship expenses for the summer.
What is the selection process?
All required paperwork must be completed and received by GII staff by May 16, 2009 to be considered to receive funding. Funding is not guaranteed until all documentation is on file with the GII office and GII has provided written documentation of approval.
Indiana awards are given on a rolling basis. Therefore submitting your documentation as soon as you receive your internship increases your chance of receiving funding as there are a limited number of awards available. Once all of your documentation has been submitted GII will provide you with written confirmation as to your acceptance or denial of funding.
Additional Guidelines:
- If a student receives funding as a sophomore, and are again selected as a junior, they will not be allowed to obtain more than a total of $3,000 during their tenure as a Notre Dame student from the program.
- Once approved, recipient responsibilities include:
- Represent Notre Dame by engaging in your internship at the highest level of performance and to follow student conduct guidelines as written in duLac.
- After the summer internship is completed, GII will request a short summary paper (1-3 pages) reflecting upon your internship and how you feel these experiences will help you in your future career. Due to GII by October 1, 2009. - GII Awards are meant to cover travel and temporary living expenses related to their internship with stated employer. They are not considered payment for work for the employer or service to Notre Dame.
- If a student fails to complete the agreed internship, it is the student’s responsibility to notify GII and return unused expense monies.
