Brief Overview

Engineering internships are available in university research laboratories, government agencies, and industry. Many employers come to the Career Fairs at Notre Dame allowing students to apply for positions on Go IRISH and network with company representatives on-campus. Students are encouraged to search websites of interesting companies which do not recruit on campus but still offer internships.

Helpful Tips

  • Conduct informational interviews and network with professors, researchers, graduate students, and representatives from companies to gain knowledge about your engineering field.
  • Search the Internet for researchers in areas of interest and read their publications.
  • Attend career fairs and use Go IRISH to find appealing positions.
  • If a company grabs your attention but is not recruiting at Notre Dame, look at the company website for positions and apply online.
  • When writing your resume and cover letter, use technical jargon when describing work experience or projects and be sure to outline your computer skills.
  • After applying to a position, use contacts from career fairs, Irish Online, and CareerSearch to determine the hiring manager. Send your cover letter and resume to the person responsible for making the hiring decisions.
  • Be persistent; an internship search can take time and energy.
