PROGRAM DEADLINES HAVE PASSED AND ALL FUNDING HAS BEEN ALLOCATED FOR 2011.

The Career Center is pleased to have the opportunity to provide a limited number of internship expense funding opportunities for Notre Dame students. Internships are important opportunities for students to gain experience and training related to their career and academic interests. A successful internship should contain a learning component and a greater understanding of the organization and the industry within which the internship takes place. The Career Center recommends students participate in internships to help clarify their career decisions

Below is an explanation of the different programs available and their individual requirements.

Indiana Internships

Application deadline is May 14, 2010.

The Indiana program is funded through a grant from the Lilly Endowment supporting efforts to stem the Indiana Brain Drain. This program provides funding for expenses related to internships accepted in the state of Indiana.

For complete details, please read the Indiana Careers Internship Funding Policies.

National (US – Beyond Indiana) Internships

The National Internship Funding program was developed to assist the number of students seeking to obtain internships in many of the industries that do not typically pay interns. These funds are available to support those students taking unpaid internships in specific targeted fields.

For complete details, please read the National Internship Funding Policies.

International Internships

The International Internship Funding program provides students the opportunity to accept internships abroad with the knowledge that they will be provided additional funds to pay for travel and living expenses during their international experience. As international opportunities continue to develop with The Career Center some may be posted on Go IRISH for students to apply to that are already “pre-approved” for funding, if the student is offered the position.

For complete details, please read the International Internship Funding Policies.

Student Affairs Internship Support Fund

The Student Affairs Internship Support Fund was conceived realizing that many industries in which students wish to enter provide unpaid internships. An unpaid internship is often cost prohibitive to a student that needs some financial support to live and work in a city away from home. The Student Affairs Internship Support Fund is designed to aid students by providing a stipend to cover expenses incurred during the summer to support their experience.

For complete details, please read the Student Affairs Internship Support Fund Policies.

Non-Traditional Time Frame Fund

One of the most compelling indicators of future success for college students is a summer internship. Internships provide a bridge between the formal skills students develop within their academics and the professional workplace. Employers value, and anymore all but expect seniors to have at least one summer internship prior to hiring them.

The Non-Traditional Time Frame Fund was created for students participating in Notre Dame Study Abroad programs that are off-cycle of traditional semesters.  Certain study abroad programs do not allow students the time to participate in an 8 week summer internship or leave them with large amounts of time in the fall, winter or spring before the next semester begins. (Example:  Fall Berlin Program runs September  - February, Spring Berlin Program runs March – July)

For complete details, please read the Non-Traditional Time Frame Fund Policies.

What documents do I need to apply for the program?

Each program has different requirements so please read the specific policies for the program you are interested in.

What are my responsibilities if I am selected for an award?

  • Represent Notre Dame by engaging in your internship at the highest level of performance and to follow student conduct guidelines as written in duLac.
  • After the summer internship is completed, GII will request a short summary paper (1-3 pages) outlining your experiences and how you feel these experiences will help you in your future career. Due to GII by October 1, 2010
  • GII Awards are meant to cover travel and temporary living expenses related to their internship with stated employer. They are not considered payment for work for the employer or service to Notre Dame.
  • If a student fails to complete the agreed internship, it is the student’s responsibility to notify GII and return unused expense monies.
