Externship & Job Shadow Programs

Notre Dame Job Shadow Program

The Notre Dame Career Center Job Shadow Program allows students to work with an alumnus for a day in a city of the student’s choosing, preferably their hometown, during Winter Break. This program encourages students to take a day to explore a possible career field and to lay the groundwork for future networking possibilities. Over 1,200 alumni have volunteered for the program. The Career Center staff will match as best as possible the student with an Alum who has volunteered for the program.

The sponsoring alumnus and the student jointly determine the role of the student for the job shadow experience. Depending upon the situations regarding the particular shadowing experience, a student may be a participant, an observer, or both. The role should be discussed between the student and alum prior to the shadowing day.

Notre Dame Externship Program

The Career Center has partnered with Notre Dame Alumni to launch an exciting new Summer Externship Program. In Summer 2009, over 18 Notre Dame students were able to participate in externships with hedge funds, commercial banks, and other financial institutions both on Wall Street and in Chicago. Two students were also able to extern in retail and marketing.

The duration of Externships will vary from three days to a maximum of three weeks to allow the students to network with alumni and their colleagues, gain additional insight into the industry, and in some cases participate in projects and gain hands on experience.. Externships differ from Internships due to the fact that they are shorter in duration and academic credit is not offered. Students interested in participating in externship opportunities for Summer 2010, should apply on Go IRISH in the spring when the positions are posted.
