The Columbia Publishing Course

Sponsored by the Journalism School at Columbia University in New York, this is a 6 week intensive introduction to all aspects of book and magazine publishing as well as digital media. Students learn from writers, editors, publishers, and other leaders in the industry. Applications may be submitted beginning December 1, 2009.

The U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service (US&FCS), the trade promotion unit of the International Trade Administration (ITA), Department of Commerce (DOC) is recruiting new commercial officers and we thought you might want to make your students aware of this exciting opportunity. Our organization only recruits career candidates once every two or three years and our staffing effort is underway. This is an entry-level opportunity in the Foreign Service as a career-candidate Commercial Officer leading to career status. You can find specific qualification requirements in the vacancy announcement. Additional details are available in the information package on the employment page of the www.trade.gov/cs website. U.S. citizenship is a requirement.

We are focusing our recruitment effort at individuals who have completed, or are near completion of their graduate degrees, and are primarily looking for candidates with a concentration in international business and two years of specialized experience as defined below:

  • Assisting with the production of regional and/or international market analyses that are accepted as accurate and authoritative, and that form the basis of business-related decisions.
  • Assisting with the development or implementation of an international trade and marketing strategy for a U.S. product or service, which includes identifying target markets, analyzing the potential of these markets, developing a business plan to successfully establish business operations, and promoting the product or service domestically and internationally.
  • Assisting in the planning and implementation of trade promotion activities such as trade events.
  • Actively participating in meetings with foreign governments or other organizations to influence the outcome of business activities between U.S. companies and foreign markets.
  • Contributing to the analysis of commercial issues requiring trade, economic, or business knowledge of one or more geographic or political regions.

The mission of the Foreign Commercial Service is to place primary emphasis on the promotion of exports of goods and services from the United States (particularly by small and medium-sized businesses) and on the protection of United States business interests abroad. We operate 108 offices throughout the country and 150 around the world, covering 96 percent of U.S. export markets. Commercial Service Officers assist companies to start in exporting or increase their sales to new global markets. Services for our clients include:

  • World-class market research
  • Trade events that promote products or services to qualified buyers
  • Introductions to qualified buyers and distributors
  • Counseling and advocacy through every step of the export process
